The Case of the Missing Vision
Once upon a time in a quaint village, there lived an old lady named Agnes. Agnes had lived a long, fulfilling life, but age had taken its toll, and she gradually lost her vision, leaving her completely blind. Desperate to see again, she called upon Dr. Mortimer, the most reputed physician in the area.
Dr. Mortimer visited Agnes and examined her condition. He confidently told her, "I can restore your sight, but my fee is quite substantial."
Agnes, eager to regain her vision, agreed. "I will pay you the large fee if you cure me, but if you fail, you will receive nothing."
Dr. Mortimer accepted the terms and thus began his daily visits to Agnes's home. Each day, he administered treatments and gave her hope. However, as he treated her, he couldn’t help but notice her beautiful, antique furniture. Coveting these items, he devised a sinister plan. He decided to delay her cure and started taking a piece of furniture with him every day, thinking she wouldn’t notice.
Weeks passed, and Agnes remained patient, trusting in the doctor’s skills. Finally, after having taken almost all her valuable furniture, Dr. Mortimer decided to complete the treatment. One bright morning, Agnes's sight was restored. She blinked, squinted, and then slowly opened her eyes, seeing the world clearly once more.
Dr. Mortimer, rubbing his hands with greedy anticipation, demanded his fee. But Agnes, now fully aware of her surroundings, refused to pay.
"You must be mistaken," she said. "You have not restored my sight properly. I cannot see all my furniture. The room looks bare."
Enraged, Dr. Mortimer dragged Agnes to court, confident that the law would side with him. Standing before the judge, he presented his case, insisting that he had fulfilled his part of the bargain and deserved his fee.
The judge turned to Agnes and asked, "Why do you claim your sight has not been properly restored?"
Agnes responded calmly, "Your Honor, I agreed to pay the doctor if he restored my sight. However, upon opening my eyes, I noticed that much of my furniture, which I saw before I went blind, was missing. Therefore, my sight is clearly not completely restored."
The judge, understanding the situation, thought for a moment. Then he gave his verdict. "Dr. Mortimer, it is evident that you have attempted to deceive this court and your patient. You will return all the furniture you have taken and receive no payment for your dishonesty. Justice is served."
And so, Agnes regained both her sight and her cherished furniture, while Dr. Mortimer left the court with his reputation tarnished and his pockets empty. The villagers learned a valuable lesson about trust and greed, and they spoke of the cunning old lady and the greedy doctor for generations to come.
